Awesome game-used football signed by members of the 1942 National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes. It represents the first of OSU's six National Championships in program history and was presented to assistant coach Hugh S. "Mac" McGranahan after a game during the 1942 season. The ball itself is an official Spalding Ohio State football stamped accordingly with more than 40 signatures: most notably Head Coach Paul Brown who would later coach the Cleveland Browns and be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame; QB/RB Les Horvath who won the Heisman trophy in 1944 after sitting out the entire 1943 season to focus on academics; and offensive lineman Don McCafferty who went on to coach the Baltimore Colts to Super Bowl V victory. According to our consignor McGrahan's grandson who was given the ball by his late grandfather it was the game ball from Ohio State's 21-7 win over rival Michigan to clinch the Big 10 title on November 21 1942 thanks in large part to Horvath's 3 TD's. The ball shows appropriate game use and has held up remarkably well despite its age showing bold and vivid black pen signatures largely confined to the two back panels. It retains some air but cannot be fully inflated. McGranahan who signed on the front panel near the laces along with Brown and two others assisted the legendary coach at Massillon Washington High School (Brown's Alma mater) in Massillon Ohio before joining Brown on the Ohio State coaching staff in 1941. In the photo Brown is seated near right wearing a sweater and "Mac" is seated just next to him in a white t-shirt.
