Assigned the number "3" after the departure of Hall of Fame player/manager Frankie Frisch switch-hitting third baseman Jimmy Brown proved to be a vital weapon in the Red Birds attack during the War years. The National League's bridesmaid in 1941 (the Cards had held sole possession of first place as late as September 2) St. Louis went on to unseat the world champion Yankees in '42 with Brown hitting .300 in the Fall Classic to lead the charge. Offered here is a St. Louis Cardinals home jersey worn by Brown during the 1941 campaign"”and quite possibly during subsequent seasons as well.

The jersey features "Cardinals" embroidered across the chest in red-on-blue characters with the famed birds-and-bat logo highlighting the team name. Red trim lines the sleeve endings neck and zipper path and a stars-and-stripes "HEALTH" crest is sewn to the left sleeve in commemoration of the men and women serving in World War II. Within the cotton-lined collar a "Rawlings" local manufacturer's label is accompanied by a size "42" tag. On the left front tail "Jim Brown" and "41" are chain stitched in red. While the latter feature denotes the year of the jersey's issue the above-mentioned "HEALTH" patch was added to all Major League jerseys from 1942 through 1945 suggesting this garment's use in subsequent seasons. Significant wear is evident throughout the jersey with thinning fabric and resultant holes about the jersey's neckline and sleeves as well as some fraying along the collar. A large hole is present on the front of the left sleeve. With no alterations whatsoever this jersey is particularly alluring in that until the latter portion of the '43 season nobody but Brown donned the number "3." (While Blix Donnelly was given the number after Brown's 1943 departure he was not to appear in a single game). These facts all but assure us that Brown wore the jersey in both the '41 season and the 1942 World Championship campaign.
