If you had to pick Joe DiMaggio’s greatest season, it would inevitably be 1941. The star center-fielder's bat powered the Yanks to a remarkable nine World Championships in his thirteen seasons in New York, and in 1941 he was an unstoppable force. The Yankee Clipper hit .357 with 30 homers and a league-leading 125 RBI. But what made 1941 his greatest season was his MLB record 56-game hitting streak. In that unprecedented stretch, DiMaggio hit .408 with 91 hits in 223 at-bats including 15 homers and 55 RBI, highlighting a season so incredible that it earned him the American League MVP over Ted Williams who batted .406 for the entire '41 season!
Presented here is one of Joe D's 1941-42 Hillerich & Bradsby game used bats from his greatest run in pinstripes. Factory records at the Louisville Slugger Museum show that DiMaggio ordered this exact model bat several times from 4/23/1941 through 9/19/1942. (For reference, his 56-game hit streak lasted from May 15 to July 16, 1941.) The bat shows heavy use with a professionally repaired handle crack. Many ball marks are found on the barrel and checking from repeated ball contact is present on the left barrel. The contact area on the left barrel is a desirable characteristic of DiMaggio gamers as he was a “label up” hitter, which resulted in concentrated ball contact in this area. Cleat marks are visible on the right and back barrel. The PSA/DNA authentication letter states that the excessive use present on the bat indicates it has seen use after it was retired by DiMaggio. The LOA goes on to state that this additional use does not detract from the integrity of the bat, which received an overall grade of GU 7.5 by PSA/DNA.
