The 1940 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament was held in March of that year at the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City Missouri. The 4th Annual NAIA Basketball Tournament it featured 32 different schools playing in an intense single-elimination format. This was the year that the National College Basketball Tournament (NCBT) changed its name to the National Association for Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB). The championship game saw Tarkio College (Mo.) beat the Aztecs of San Diego State 52-42. By virtue of the defeat San Diego State became the first team to lose back-to-back title games.

This lot features the second-place trophy the Aztecs walked away with that evening. The 25-inch tall award features a pair of golden colored men’s basketball players on its wooden base (11” wide by four inches high) flanking a large brass pillar. Two-thirds of the way up the pillar shows three eagles balancing a large brass ball on top of which stands a celebratory Romanesque figure stretching to the stars. The right hand of the top figure is missing. Each member’s name of the 1940 Aztecs men’s basketball team is engraved at the base of the pillar including head coach Morris H. Gross who served in that capacity from 1929 to 1942 and compiled an overall record of 190-85. On the front of the wooden base rests a large engraved brass plaque that reads: “NATIONAL INTERCOLLEGIATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT SECOND PLACE 1940.”

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
