Unlike any other “All-Star” game held in any sport the Chicago College All-Star Game was unique because it pitted the best collegiate athletes not against other collegiate players but against a team from the professional NFL. Started by Arch Ward the creator of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game the game was traditionally held in Chicago’s Soldier Field. USC’s quarterback/running back Ambrose “Amby” Schindler donned this helmet during the 1940 College All-Star Game. Amby scored two touchdowns and won the game MVP honors for his work in the 45-28 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He is #24 on the far right in the attached photo.
The open-face full-fibre Spalding helmet has a silver-grey leather body with red and blue leather detail on the crown. The exterior shows moderate game use with some nice contact abrasions and scuffs. The interior shows perspiration staining and wear from use with a complete suspension system still intact. “Schindly” is hand written on the interior leather head piece. The Spalding and size “7” stamping is still legible as is the leather and elastic chin strap. A very attractive and rare piece from the early days of the College All-Star Game.
