In 1939, the Yankees became the first team ever to win four consecutive World Series titles, a feat surpassed by just one team since -- the '53 Yanks. New York ran away with the pennant with a record of 106-45, 17 games ahead of the second place Boston Red Sox. A rather easy sweep of the Cincinnati Reds in the Fall Classic sealed it that year. The season also marked the club's first-ever game day radio broadcast and would be the final campaign in pinstripes for Lou Gehrig, the ALS having now taken hold of its eponym.
This '39 Yankees team-signed Official American League (Harridge) ball holds 28 signatures including Gehrig (4-5/10) on the east panel. A 24-year-old Joe DiMaggio has signed the north panel adjacent to the OAL stamp. Staff ace Red Ruffing has signed the sweet spot. Earl Combs, Lefty Gomez, Bill Dickey and Joe Gordon round out the seven Hall of Fame signatures. Others include Frank Crosetti, Charlie Keller, Red Rolfe, Spud Chandler, Bump Hadley, Steve Sundra, George Selkirk, Arndt Jorgens, Johnny Murphy, Babe Dahlgren, Jake Powell, Marius Russo, Buddy Rosar, and Art Fletcher (coach). The signatures come in faded black ink that range mostly 3-5/10. Only one autograph, Tommy Henrich, has been deemed clubhouse by JSA. An important record-setting team ball with the Iron Horse and Yankee Clipper is tough to find. The well-toned ball remains in GD/VG shape, with a very light coat of shellac that has chipped in some areas. Full LOA from JSA.
