No man has had a part of as many World Championships as Frank Crosetti. First, as a player, Crosetti was the shortstop on eight Yankees teams that won the World Series, then as a coach with the team collected another nine World Championship rings. Out of all those World Championship clubs, most historians agree the 1939 team was the very best, with Frank Crosetti an integral cog in the club which won 106 games and then took their fourth consecutive Championship. That 1939 season was one of Crosetti’s best; his flawless work at shortstop and clutch hitting earning him a spot on that year’s All-Star team. This group collects two Frank Crosetti signed pieces: a signed 8x10 and a Yankees payroll check from that magical 1939 season. The Yankees payroll check is dated June 15, 1939 and made out for $2,786.25. The check is signed by team president Ed Barrow and endorsed on the reverse by Frank Crosetti. The back also includes a unique look into the workings of a big league team in 1939 as there is a $30 refund for Crosetti’s 1938 uniform and then that $30 is deducted as a deposit for his 1939 uniform. Each man has signed in black fountain pen. The check shows medium wear with a vertical crease. from folding Standard bank cancellations are found and these holes partially run through Crosetti’s signature on the reverse. The companion piece to this lot is a William Greene N.Y. World-Telegram photo of Crosetti and third baseman Red Rolfe. Posed in front of the Yankee Stadium dugout, both men sport the 1839-1939 Centennial Patch on their sleeves, identifying it as being taken during the ’39 season. Crosetti has signed the photo in crisp black fountain pen. The photo has the Greene stamping on the reverse and a pencil notation “Red Rolfe.” Two nice signed pieces from the shortstop of what many consider the greatest team in Major League history.
