To mark baseball’s 100th anniversary in 1939, the U.S. Postal Service issued a special 3-cent stamp to commemorate the Centennial. This group of 17 First Day Covers postmarked Cooperstown, New York, has been signed by 29 different stars of the game. No less than eight Hall of Fame players are found in this group including Ernie Lombardi, Hank Greenberg, Harry Heilmann, Johnny Mize, Charlie Gehringer, Bill Dickey, Bob Feller and Carl Hubbell. The other players range from 1910’s stars Lena Blackburn, Stuffy McInnis and Jack Barry to contemporary 1939 standouts Van Mungo, Lynn Nelson, Dolf Camilli, Babe Phelps, Roy Parmelee, Nels Potter, Nick Etten, Wayne Ambler, Skeeter Newsom, Dario Lodigiani, Ival Goodman, Wally Moses and Dee Miles plus Sporting News editor C.C. Johnson Spink and National League President Ford C. Frick (HOF). The Joe Cronin included in the lot has been deemed secretarial by PSA/DNA. Twelve are single-signed, two are dual-signed, one holds three signatures and two are signed by five. The envelopes range in condition due to mailing and the signatures are on a whole clear and crisp on the colorful envelopes.
