Pictured here is the 1938 West All-Star squad which defeated the East by a score of 5-4 in just the sixth official All-Star Game of Negro League history. The heralded mid-season contest drew 30000 spectators to Comiskey Park including Chicago Mayor Edward J. Kelly who threw out the ceremonial first ball. Although many key Negro League players were not in uniform (Josh Gibson Ray Dandridge and Mule Suttles were withheld from the game by team owners who didn't want to see their star players injured) the crowd nonetheless enjoyed an exciting showdown. Behind four shutout innings from hurler Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe and an impressive 3-for-4 display at the plate from slugger Neil Robinson it was the West that emerged victorious. In addition to Radcliffe and Robinson other players featured in this 26 man team photo include Alec Radcliffe Ted Strong Quincy Trouppe Henry Milton Newt Allen Hilton Smith Byron Johnson Sug Cornelius Parnell Woods and Frank Duncan. Although the 11" x 14" original photo has some condition issues the majority of wear is located around the outer edges and therefore impinges only minimally upon the players themselves. The sepia-toned photo which is mounted on card-stock backing grades in overall VG condition with some foxing discoloration and paper loss. Fortunately the image itself is quite clear and offers good contrast in its rendering of classic uniforms from the Kansas City Monarchs Chicago American Giants Indianapolis ABC's and Birmingham Black Barons. At the bottom left corner of the photo there is a printed white ink notation: "Sixth Annual East-West Ball Game / West 5 East 4 / August 21-1938 - Attendance 30000 / Comiskey Park - Chicago Ill." A classic original image that will benefit greatly from minor professional restoration. Nicely matted and framed to overall dimensions of 22” by 19”.
