With the four game sweep of the Cubs in the World Series the Yankees did the impossible by becoming the first team to win three consecutive World Championships. The 1938 club may have been the best Yankee team of all time. The club boasted veteran Lou Gehrig who hit 29 homers that summer and new comer Joe DiMaggio who hit .324 with 32 homers. The 21-game winner Red Ruffing and 18 game winner Lefty Gomez gave the Yankees the best starting 1-2 rotation in either league and the team clinched the pennant by 9.5 games.
25 members of what may be the greatest of all Yankees teams have signed this ball including their owner Jacob Rupert who signed the sweet spot right along with his star Lou Gehrig. Alongside Lou are fellow Hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio Red Ruffing Joe Gordon Lefty Gomez (CH) and Bill Dickey (CH). The supporting cast are all present including Red Rolfe Frankie Crosetti Tommy Henrich Myrl Hoag Bill Knickerbocker George Selkirk Joe Glenn Jake Powell Babe Dahlgren and Arndt Jorgens as well as pitchers Monte Pearson Spud Chandler Bump Hadley Steve Sundra Joe Beggs Ivy Andrews and super reliever Johnny Murphy. The presence of Paul Schreiber and Jacob Rupert on the ball dates it to 1938 as Schreiber joined the team mid-way through the season as their batting practice pitcher and Rupert passed away in January of 1939.
All signatures on the Official American League (William Harridge) baseball come in black fountain pen with an overall average of 6-7/10 for strength and eye appeal. A light coat of shellac has been applied to the surface and the signatures have been well preserved. One of the all-time greatest teams in Yankees history. Gomez and Dickey were deemed Clubhouse signed by PSA.
