The 1938 All Star Game was held in Cincinnati for the first time and Reds manager Bill McKechnie was one of manager Bill Terry’s coaches for the game. The game was real treat for the starting pitcher for the Nationals was Johnny Vander Meer, the Reds pitching star who had just thrown two back-to-back no-hitters. He started the game and pitched 3 innings of 1-hit ball. The seventh inning saw one of the oddest plays in All-Star history when Leo Durocher came to bat with a Frank McCormick on first. Ordered to sacrifice bunt, Leo obligingly tapped the ball to Jimmie Foxx at third, who threw wildly to first. As the ball rolled into right field, McCormick raced around the bases towards home. Joe DiMaggio fielded the ball and threw towards Bill Dickey at the plate, but the ball sailed high, and McCormick scored. Meanwhile, Leo Durocher never slowed down, and he too scored before Dickey managed to get a handle on the ball. The Nationals would win the game 4-1. This beautiful art deco styled Elgin watch was presented to Bill McKechnie for his place on the All Star Team coaching staff. McKechnie, who had previously managed the Pirates to a World Championship in 1925, would pilot the Reds to a World Championship in 1940, making him the first person to win World Series titles with two different teams. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1962 and remains one of only three managers to win pennants with three different teams – Pirates 1925, Cardinals 1928, and Reds 1939-40.
