An imposing physical specimen with bulging muscles, two-time American League batting champion Jimmie Foxx was more than just a slugger. In 1945, at the tail end of his career, he pitched for the Phillies and won a game after striking out 10 batters and posting a 1.59 ERA. In his prime he challenged Babe Ruth's single-season home run record by clubbing 58 moon shots in 1932, won three MVP awards (1932, ‘33 and ’38), and the 1933 A.L. Triple Crown. He also won two World Series titles with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics, and retired as the second leading home run hitter of all-time with 534 to his credit. In virtually every A.L. park, there was a story to tell about a mighty Foxx homer. In Chicago, he hit a ball over the double-decked stands at Comiskey Park, clearing 34th Street. His gigantic clout in Cleveland won the 1935 All-Star Game. In Yankee Stadium, his blast high into the left field upper deck had enough power to break a seat. In St. Louis, his ninth inning blast in Game 5 of the 1930 Series just about clinched it for the A's. In Detroit, he hit one of the longest balls ever, way up into the left field bleachers. As most astute bat collectors know, high-grade Foxx examples are among the most elusive to find of all the 500 Home Run Club members.

The specimen offered here, dating from the 1938-39 period, was used by Foxx during his tenure with the Red Sox, including his prolific 1938 season that saw him lead the league in batting (.349), runs batted in (175), and finish second in homers with 50 on his way to capturing his third league MVP Award. The 38-ounce, 35-inch bat is uncracked and shows excellent use including ball marks and ball stitch marks visible on the right, left, and back barrel. Also visible on the bat are cleat marks, and there is a light coat of pine tar on the handle. The manufacturer’s markings are distinct, contributing to outstanding overall display quality.Includes LOA from John Taube and Vince Malta of PSA/DNA (Graded GU 7.5).
