In an incredible response to an Ohio fan's question, Ty Cobb expresses his opinions regarding the capabilities of a number of the day's biggest stars. He astutely identifies no less than ten luminaries, and his foresight was such that nine of these gentlemen were ultimately deemed worthy of enshrinement at Cooperstown. (The tenth - Joe Jackson – needs no explanation as to his inclusion.)

The correspondence appears on a single sheet of Ty Cobb’s personal letterhead and is dated "April 26 - 37." To the man in Canton, Ohio, Cobb writes, in full: "Dear Sir: - In response to yours, the greatest pitcher for full career I think was Cy Young won 511 games around 70 or more than that great pitcher Walter Johnson who no one can overlook, now Ed Walsh in one year 1908 was beat (for one year) he won I think 40 or 42 games and relieved in 25 others. Greatest all round player in our league Eddie Collins could hit, field and run bases the base running eliminates Gehrig, Ruth, Speaker, Jackson, Lajoie, in National League guess Wagner would have topped Collins though I saw him in only a few games so I confined my selection to American League. Hope this is what you wanted I am Very Truly (signed) Ty Cobb." The legend's black-ink penmanship rates 8-9 out of 10, with the signature atop a vertical fold and showcasing 9 out of 10 in strength.

The framed sheet's visible area measures 6-7/8" by 9-1/2", and matted side-by-side with a black-and-white photo of Cobb. The total dimensions of the display equal 29-1/2" by 23-1/2". The letter appears EX in terms of freshness, with light toning in some areas and a couple of compacting folds. Though Cobb letters in general are not that uncommon, this fascinating and insightful commentary by The Georgia Peach is certainly is among the best in terms of pure, historical baseball content. Includes a full LOA from PSA DNA.
