The New York Yankees of the late 1930’s had no equal among their contemporaries in terms of baseball dominance, unless of course you looked across the river to their top minor league affiliate, the Newark Bears. The Bears would match the success of their parent club in large part because they were, in fact, a major league caliber club, stocked with top players. Yogi Berra was just one Yankee whose path to stardom in the Bronx ran right through Newark.
This beautiful photograph captures the 1938 International League Champion Newark Bears posing together on the field. Each of the twenty-four members pictured has signed the photo across his image in black ink including Charlie Keller, Atley Donald, Benny Bengough, Buddy Rosar, Marius Russo, Johnny Neunn and Buddy Blair. Boldly written along the bottom of the photo is the notation "Newark Bears – Champions International League 1938 – Champions Play-Off’s Rochester 4-3 – Buffalo 4-1." Signatures range in grade from 7/10 to 10/10, averaging 9/10. Many of the members of the 1938 Bears were also part of the previous year’s club, which is considered by many to be the greatest minor league team ever assembled. There is a tiny spot of discoloration on one of the player’s shoulders as well as a slight crease along the top border, otherwise in Excellent condition. An outstanding signed photograph dating from the greatest era in Newark Bears history. 13" x 7 ½". Matted and framed. Accompanying the signed photo is a multi-page “Little World Series Score Card” for a game between the Newark Bears and Columbus. The score card features the 1937 International League Champion Newark Bears team on the cover, great period advertising on the interior and scoring grids that have been scored in pencil. VG-VG/EX condition.
