The 1936-1939 New York Yankees have gone down as one of the greatest dynasties in Major League history. Led by manager Joe McCarthy, the late 1930s Yanks featured a core lineup that included Hall of Famer sluggers Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, and Bill Dickey and starting pitchers Red Ruffing and Lefty Gomez. The secret behind McCarthy’s dynasty was the rotating cast of secondary characters that each seemed to have career years just when the Yankees needed them. On the 1937 team, these included outfielders George Selkirk, Tommy Henrich, and Myril Hoag who batted .328, .320 and .301 respectively. On the mound, Bump Hadley and Monty Pearson added 20 wins to Lefty Gomez’s 21 and Red Ruffing’s 20 to give the ’37 Yanks a fearsome starting quartet. The team swept to the AL pennant to face the New York Giants in the World Series. For the second year in a row, the Yankees beat the Giants, this time in five games, outscoring their rivals 29 to 12. This incredible ball, marked “1937” by a previous owner, collects 21 of the World Champion Yankees. The ball has been signed by Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig, Joe McCarthy, Red Ruffing, Lefty Gomez, Bill Dickey, and Earle Combs plus Frank Crosetti, Don Heffner, Frank Makosky, Jack Saltzgaver, Red Rolfe, George Selkirk, Bump Hadley, Monte Pearson, Joe Glenn, Johnny Murphy, Ivy Andrews, Jake Powell, Myril Hoag, and coaches Johnny Schulte and Art Fletcher. There are a few tough signatures present on the ball including troubled outfielder Jake Powell who died by his own hand a few years after he signed this ball and skipper Joe McCarthy who routinely had a clubhouse boy sign for him. Curiously missing from this ball is Joe DiMaggio, but his absence is remedied by the other six Hall of Famers present. The signatures are in strong black fountain pen and represent nicely against the warm leather tone of the ball. The ball comes with an LOA from PSA/DNA for the signature authenticity.
