In the summer of 1937, there was no bigger boxing figure than Joe Louis. Dubbed the the Brown Bomber, Louis defeated James Braddock for the Heavyweight title the previous year and had become the idol of Black America. While he could have made a small fortune off exhibition bouts, Louis decided to help his friends out by forming a touring softball team, thereby providing an income for far more people than exhibition boxing matches could. In Depression ravaged 1937 America, this was a blessing to those chosen for the team. Named Joe Louis Bombers, the team featured the Champ at first base and toured the country, bringing entertaining softball to small towns as well as giving fans an up close look at the Brown Bomber himself. On the ballfield Louis was not quite as dominating as he was in the ring some newspapers described him as lumbering around first base, and he was responsible for more than his share of errors. But being the imposing physical specimen he was, Joe Louis could sure pound the ball, giving his Bomber nickname a whole new meaning. This Type 1 photo depicts Joe Louis in an informal moment donning the jersey of the team that bears his nickname. The photo shows good toning from age and strong edges. The reverse of the photo has the Acme Newspapers, Inc Cleveland Bureau stamping along with a 7-16-37 date stamp and several handwritten production and catalog notes. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
