In addition to the many medals and documents in this collection are dozens of fascinating original photographs depicting Luz Long doing what he did best: competing in either the long jump or the triple jump. They come directly from the Long family and several were submitted to PSA/DNA for Type I authentication. Offered here is a pair of sequence action shots with the German track star gliding through the air during a triple jump attempt. These photos must be from the same jump based on the exact same pose shown by a seated competitor watching in the background. Luz would often point one or both arms outward for better aerodynamics during his jumps, a technique that was common among many broad and triple jumpers in that period. He is pictured wearing his Leipziger Sport Club track uniform, so these images are not from the 1936 Berlin Olympics. They do date to circa 1936, though, based on the reverse editorial notes.

A “Das Sportbild von Schirner” stamp on the reverse of one [double arm raise] photo credits it to Max Schirner, a prominent German photographer from Berlin who covered the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The other shot snapped a split second earlier has a post-dated “Weltbilt [Worldview]” stamp along with multiple handwritten notes in blue ink including “6.8.1936 14.62 Dreisprung [triple jump]”. 14.62 meters was Luz’s 10th place mark at the Berlin Olympics on August 8, 1936; we suspect this editorial note was added when the photo was re-used by the press. The photos each measure 5” by 7” (13 x 18 cm) and come encapsulated in PSA/DNA Type I holders with separate letters from PSA/DNA noting the pedigree from the Luz Long Collection.
