By the date this photo was snapped, Jesse Owens was already nationally known track and field superstar, but it precedes by a month his triumphs at the 1936 Berlin Olympics that would make him an international legend. A year before this 1936 photo was taken, Owens had recorded what has become known as “The Day of Days.” On May 25, 1935, Owens set three track and field records and tied a fourth – all within 45 minutes!
This magnificent original photo shows the moment Owens leaped 25 feet and 5/8 inches to win the 1936 NCAA Track and Field Championship. Competing for Ohio State University, Owens won championships in four individual events: the 100-meter sprint, the 200-meter sprint, the 220-yard low hurdles and the broad jump, accounting for more than half of the Buckeye team's scoring. Jesse Owens would soon be named to the 1936 U.S. Olympic Team and go on to win four Gold Medals in Berlin.
The 6.5" by 8.75" photo appears to have been trimmed along its edges and there is a faint red tint along the top edge (perhaps from editorial use). Image clarity is top-notch and no major surface issues are visible. The reverse has the original credit and caption slug dated “JUN 24, 1936” along with a more recent vintage newspaper clipping. This photo has been encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
