Jesse Owens and Luz Long developed a beautiful friendship during the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Under the watchful eye of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany, Owens won gold medals in all four events in which he competed. Germany's own Luz Long, who came in as European Long Jump champion, finished second in the event to take the silver medal. Long was the first to congratulate Owens after his gold-medal winning broad jump. The two took a victory lap around the stadium arm-in-arm, posing for pictures while an outraged Hitler looked on.

The iconic image on this rare 1936 Berlin Olympischen Speilen Presse-Bild-Zentrale Braemer & Güll card comes from that magical day on the Olympiastadion track. The #53 card is graded EX/NM+ 6.5 by SGC, with only two others having ever been graded (SGC 7 & SGC 3.5). PSA has yet to grade any #53 cards from the German series. A truly stunning example of two legendary track athletes who became the most unlikely of friends, a Black American and blonde-haired, blue-eyed German. (It should be noted that SCP sold Luz Long's 1936 Berlin silver medal for a record $488,435 in last Octover. And in 2013, we sold one of Jesse Owens' gold medals for a record $1.45 million.)
