In 1935 Cornelius Johnson was one of the countrys top high jumpers who would go on to win a gold medal in the same event at the 1936 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin Germany. An incredibly gifted athlete Johnson was competing at the time for Compton College in Los Angeles under the guidance of his track coach Hershel Smith. This lot includes an unusually constructed track-and-field trophy that was awarded to Johnson in 1935. The 15 tall award includes a two-tiered wooden base that includes a gold plaque that reads: A JOHNSON CORNELIUS Milano 25 Agosto 1935 XIII. The top of the trophy sports a large tarnished goblet with three equally tarnished columns to its right of varying heights. Uncommonly constructed for an uncommon athlete.
