The 1935 National Chicle Football set is the foundation of vintage football collecting and the first major gum issue to feature the stars of the NFL. Its 36 cards are celebrated for their bold colors and dramatic artwork, with each reverse offering a playing tip from Eddie Casey, coach of the Boston Redskins and former Harvard coach.

Card #13 features Homer Griffiths of the Chicago Cardinals. Griffiths was an All-American halfback at the University of Southern California, where he played on the powerhouse Trojan teams of the early 1930s, before moving on to the NFL with the Cardinals. The front is one of the most dynamic images in the set. Griffiths is shown stretching to make a leaping one-handed catch, wearing a red #20 jersey and white pants, with a goalpost at left and a picturesque campus scene in the background, all set against a brilliant yellow sky. The composition is full of energy, and the bright colors are beautifully preserved.

The reverse focuses on the importance of blocking, noting that "of greater value to a football team than a clever ball carrier, is a hard hitting, skilled interferer like Homer Griffiths of Chicago Cardinals." Casey explains that "a good blocker is not satisfied just to throw a body check against his man," but "keeps digging his cleats in and driving his man back," adding that "it is hard work, but it is the stuff that makes winning football teams."

This example displays bold, vibrant color, a crisp image and pleasing centering, with light corner wear consistent with the grade. The reverse is clean with strong blue ink. A colorful and eye-appealing card from the first great football set. Graded EX 5 by PSA.
