The 1935 Goudey 4-in-1  baseball set was printed on thick card stock similar to previous Goudey sets, with each measuring 2-3/8” by 2-7/8”. The R321 set, as designated by the American Card Catalog, displays four players, typically from the same team, on each card in color using reproductions of player portraits and poses from previous Goudey issues. Within each frame is the player’s surname. The backs have nine separate puzzle combinations depicting individual players such as Mickey Cochrane, Frankie Frisch and Jimmie Foxx as well as teams like the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians and Washington Senators.  There are 36 different card fronts, which each of which has between two and four different puzzle-piece backs.  In all, there are 114 different front/back combinations.

This hobby-fresh near set boasts 32 of the 36 possible card fronts including 55 of the 114 front/back combos. A total of 80 cards are included (25 duplicates). Highlighted by two unique Babe Ruth cards (same front, different backs), many Hall of Famers are represented besides the Sultan of Swat: fellow 500-HR Club members Jimmie Foxx and Mel Ott; "Gashouse Gang" Cardinals teammates Dizzy Dean and Franky Frisch; Hank Greenberg; Mickey Cochrane; Al Simmons; and a Yankees card with HOF teammates Tony Lazzeri, Red Ruffing and Bill Dickey. These cards are tough to find in any condition other than rough-edged, round-cornered, creased, low-grade form. Very few graded examples in the PSA or SGC pop reports exceed VG 3. This particular collection was preserved quite well, with dozens GD to VG looking, if not better. Nine recently came back from SGC with the following grades (pop scarcity if significant):

#1J Ruth/McManus/Brandt/Maranville - SGC VG 3 (Eight Higher out of 43)

#3A Ruth/McManus/Brandt/Maranville - SGC PR 1

#1A Frisch/Dean/Orsatti/Carleton - SGC VG 3 (Nine Higher out of 32)

#2A Frisch/Dean/Orsatti/Carleton - SGC VG 3 (Six Higher out of 29)

#2B Mahaffey/Foxx/Williams/Higgins - SGC GD+ 2.5

#6A Ruel/Simmons/Kamm/Cochrane - SGC GD+ 2.5 (Three Higher)

#7A Critz/Bartell/Ott/Mancuso - SGC VG 3 (Five Higher out of 20)

#7D Ruffing/Malone/Lazzeri/Dickey - SGC GD 2

#8F Fox/Greenberg/Walker/Rowe - SGC VG 3
