The Goudey Gum Company followed up on their wildly successful 1933 baseball card series with another set for 1934. Though smaller in scope, 96 cards compared to the 240 (actually 239 not counting the omitted Nap Lajoie card) set the year before, the sophomore series is arguably much more attractive than its predecessor. And, while the 1933’s are simple in just presenting the players, the ‘34s added an endorsement of each player written by Lou Gehrig (on 84 cards) or Chuck Klein (on 12 cards). With no Babe Ruth in the 1934 set, it is the two Lou Gehrig cards which are the stars. Card number 61 is a well composed batting pose, but card number 37 really steals the show: a smiling Lou Gehrig gazes out at the viewer, his sun-drenched face set off by a vibrant yellow background. It is simply one of the most attractive cards ever made. It just so happened Lou had a career year in 1934, winning the coveted Triple Crown with 49 homers, 166 RBI and a .363 batting average. This example of card number 37, graded a PSA EX 5, is a stunning tribute to Gehrig’s Triple Crown season. The corners are well-defined, the borders clean and white and the colors sharp. The centering is approximately 70-30 left to right and top to bottom. The text on the back is clear and crisp. This card has been encapsulated by PSA and graded EX 5.
