Joe DiMaggio is showcased in this quintessential image of the young slugger as a member of the Pacific Coast League’s San Francisco Seals. The original first generation, type 1 photograph, captured in 1933, shows an 18-year-old DiMaggio in a full body, swinging pose in his pinstriped Seals uniform. The image demonstrates excellent contrast and clarity, with superb aesthetics enhanced by the period advertising visible on the outfield wall in the background. Three years after this photograph was taken, DiMaggio would trade his Seals pinstripes for a more well know variety when he burst onto the major league landscape. Heralded beyond any rookie in the game before him, DiMaggio somehow exceeded unsurpassable expectations, leading the New York Yankees to a World Championship in 1936 and ushering in a second chapter in sports greatest dynasty.
The photo measures 9" by 7" with a penciled caption and dating on the reverse along with noted baseball photographer Sy Seidman’s name in writing as well as stamped. Culver Pictures' more recently applied copyright stamping is also present. A light crease, distant from the central image is apparent toward the right edge, as well as a light crease traversing horizontally and mild/moderate corner wear with a small area of surface staining at the lower left corner. VG-VG/EX technically, with better presentation quality. Includes a LOA from PSA/DNA (Type 1 – First Generation).
