In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Hack Wilson was the National League’s answer to Babe Ruth. The oddly-proportioned slugger (he was 5’-6” with no-neck and tiny feet) led the NL in homers from 1926 to 1928 and again in 1930 when he hit 56, a league record for 68 years. His 191 RBI in 1930 is still the best in baseball history. When Goudey released this card in 1933, Hack was playing for Brooklyn and posting his last good season. He started off 1933 great by hitting the first inside the ballpark grand slam home run in Dodgers history – only the 3rd in MLB history. Hack’s pursuit of the nightlife led to a quick career nosedive, and he was out of the majors at the end of the 1934 season. This example of his 1933 Goudey card is a thing of beauty – from the exceptional color to its near-perfect centering. One of the best in the hobby today, it has been graded a PSA NM-MT 8.
