When the very first All-Star Game was played in the summer of 1933, it was only natural that the first baseman was Lou Gehrig. The Yankees star had recently come into his own as Babe Ruth’s career was ending. In 1933, Lou would hit 32 home runs and hit .334 as he led the league in runs. This was just a teaser for the next year when he would lead the league in virtually every offensive category and win the only Triple Crown of his Hall of Fame career. Because of his star power, Goudey released two identical cards of Gehrig in 1933 with two different numbers, 92 and 160. Its beautifully rendered classic batting pose has become an iconic image in the hobby and the most collected of all his cards. This example is the scarcer high-number card 160, and it grades a PSA EX-MT 6. Centering on the card is about 55/45 side to side and bottom to top. It has a strong image and better than average color with a nice ghost transfer of another Gehrig card visible on the back.
