Bennie Bengough played the majority of his Major League career as a catcher for the 1920’s Yankee dynasty, most notably as a reserve backstop on the famed Murderers' Row squad of 1927. In hobby circles however, his greatest claim to fame is leading off the preeminent gum card set of the pre-war era. Being the #1 card in the series comes with prestige but also makes the entry highly susceptible to wear and tear due to its increased exposure on the top of piles and at the front of orderly stacks. Bucking that trend, the presented example is graded NM 7 by PSA. Among more than 500 copies recorded in PSA's census reporting, just eight examples have been assessed at a higher tier. The card features an exceptionally sharp image with bold colors and flawless registration. Centering trends toward the right edge and all four corners are square and firmly meet the NM criteria. A small fish-eye print mark is present near the right border. The reverse is clean with moderate age toning visible around the perimeter. A very strong example that should provide a significant boost to any 1933 Goudey set, registered or otherwise.
