Ed Barrow’s fifty year Major League career began in 1903 as manager of Detroit and during the teens he was president of the International League (the Minor League's top circuit). In 1918 he took over the reins as manager of the Boston Red Sox and was directly involved in one of the most important events in baseball history. It was Ed Barrow who had the crazy notion to take one of the game's best pitchers Babe Ruth and make him into an everyday player. After helping turn Ruth into baseball's greatest drawing card he had the good sense to follow the slugger to New York becoming the team's business manager in 1921. It was Barrow's shrewd eye for talent and keen business acumen which helped build the Yankees into the greatest sports dynasty of all time. In 1953 his many accomplishments within the game were acknowledged with his induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Presented here is a matted 8” by 10” studio portrait photo of Ed Barrow inscribed to fellow Hall of Fame baseball executive William Harridge. Among his many contributions to the game Harridge served as President of the American League from 1931-38. Barrow’s inscription across the lower right corner of the matte (partially touching the image) reads “To my good friend Wm. ‘Bill Harridge’ Ed Barrow 1/13/39.” The black ink inscription rates 8-9/10. The matte shows some discoloration at the top and sides from apparent moisture but the image appears unaffected. Nicely framed. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
