Addendum: We recently discovered bat boy Eddie Bennett on this ball.
The Spalding/Reach 'Babe Ruth Home Run Special' baseball presented here has been signed by 17 members of the 1929 New York Yankees who finished second in the American League pennant race to Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics. This ended a run of three straight World Series Championships by the Bronx Bombers. Compounding this was the shocking death from influenza of their manager Miller Huggins near the end of the season.
As usual Babe Ruth owns the sweet spot (5/10) while fellow Hall of Famers and "Murderer's Row" battery mates Earle Combs (4/10) and Tony Lazzeri (5.5/10) are found on the west and north panels respectively. And just beneath the "Horse Hide Cover" stamp on the east panel is a real treat: Babe's personal bat boy Eddie Bennett. Apparently PSA/DNA missed the elusive autograph because they failed to mention this ever-important detail on their initial 2008 paperwork. His presence more than makes up for the loss of Lou Gehrig who apparently was not available to sign that day. Bennett rarely signed anything let alone a baseball and his premature death in 1935 has made his autograph virtually extinct.
The other Yankees included are Bill Dickey (HOF) Leo Durocher (HOF) Bots Nekola Tom Zachary Bob Shawkey Ardnt Jorgens Sam Byrd Ed Wells Fred Heimach Bennie Bengough Mark Koenig Roy Sherid and one unidentified (directly about Ruth on north panel). Signatures are all done in black fountain pen that ranges 3.5 to 6.5 out of 10. The VG-EX ball has some soiling scuffing and staining (all of the moderate variety) and is evenly toned to a cream color with all manufacturer stamps perfectly legible just like the autographs. A ball signed by Ruth and his beloved bat boy. What a find!
Full LOA from PSA/DNA (newly issued letter adding Eddie Bennett as a notable autograph).
