Born Eugenio Saraceni to poor Sicilian immigrants in New York, Gene Sarazen was a self-taught golfer who embodied the same pull yourself up by the bootstraps‚ spirit that made Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey heroes to Americans in the 1920s. Sarazen was one of the first golfers to use the interlocking grip on the golf club. He won seven major tournaments including the US Open in 1922 and 1932 and three PGA Championships. As the era premier golfer, Sarazen was a natural pick to appear in Lucky Strike 1928 ad campaign that featured the era best athletes. This 10 x20 trolly car ad panel captures Sarazen as he follows through on one of his swings. Set against a pale yellow background with the red Lucky Strike logo, this is one of the finest examples of 1920s advertising art. The panel exhibits just light toning and wear from age, its colors remaining bright and clear. The professional matte and framing enhance the visual beauty of this piece.
