In the late 1920s, the New York Yankees had their spring training headquarters at St. Petersburg, FL. The city boasted two ballparks at the time, Crescent Lake Field (later renamed “Miller Huggins Field” in honor of the late Yankees manager) and Waterfront Park. Though usually home to the Boston Braves, Waterfront Park was occasionally used by the Yanks as well, and that is the location in which this tremendous snapshot of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig was taken. The dynamic duo pose before the rustic wooden bleachers in their well-used Yankees road uniforms, hands on hips and Ruth’s cap set at a jaunty angle. This candid snapshot captures the pairs at the very height of their careers – Ruth was fresh off his record-setting 60 home run season while Gehrig had hit .373 and was voted 1927s MVP.

The Type 1 snapshot has taken on a nice sepia tone from age. The corners are sharp and there are no discernible creases or discolorations. The reverse has been carefully labeled by the original owner, “Babe Ruth + Lou Gehrig New York Yankees taken by J.W.E. at Waterfront Park, St. Petersburg, Florida” in strong fountain pen. The Velox paper stamping is present. This photograph has been encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
