The Games of the IX Olympiad held in Amsterdam were the first to be called the Summer Olympic Games. In addition the 1928 Games initiated other firsts that have since become tradition: the lighting of the Olympic Flame; the 16-day event schedule; and the parade of nations at the opening ceremonies leading off with Greece and ending with the host countryin this case the Netherlands. Perhaps the most important first at these Olympics was the monumental step of adding Womens Athletics (i.e. Track & Field) and Gymnastics as official events. The 1900 Paris Games were in fact the first Olympics to feature female athletes; however only 22 women competed across five sports. The 1928 Games marked the largest spike in female competitors to date. This lot represents an important historic symbol in the rise of womens rights and female athletic participation worldwide. The host nation Netherlands won the team gold medal in the Olympics first ever Womens Gymnastics competition amid controversial protests against allowing women to compete. Featured here is an actual 1st place winners gold medal issued to Petronella van Randwijk one of the 12 Dutch-winning gymnasts to earn such award. Tragically she was one of only eight on her team to survive World War II.

A total of 46 nations competed at the 28 Games encompassing 2971 participants. In all 254 gold medals 258 silvers and 259 bronzes were minted. The medal itself is made of gilt silver (as are all golds after 1912) and is designed by Giuseppe Cassioli. It measures 55mm in diameter and 3mm thick and weighs 66 grams. The obverse features Nike Goddess of Victory seated above the stadium holding a winner's crown and palm branch with "IX OLYMPIADE AMSTERDAM 1928" scripted on the right. The reverse shows a winner carried by jubilant athletes. Incredibly well-preserved in both color and texture the medal remains in Near Mint condition with light handling. The medal has strong provenance as it was part of renowned Olympic expert Jaco Treurniets personal collection for many decades. Recently many Olympic items from the Dutch collector hit the auction block in Europe. This extraordinary Olympic gold medal is a museum-worthy artifact rarely made available to the collecting public.

Includes Auction LOA from MPO Auctions which sold this medal in August 2015.
