The Games of the IX Olympiad held in Amsterdam were the first to becalled the “Summer Olympic Games.” In addition the 1928 Games initiatedother firsts that have since become tradition: the lighting of theOlympic Flame; the 16-day event schedule; and the parade of nations atthe opening ceremonies leading off with Greece and ending with the hostcountry—in this case the Netherlands. Perhaps the most important firstat these Olympics was the monumental step of adding Women’s Athletics(i.e. Track & Field) and Gymnastics as official events.

Presented here is an extremely scarce 1928 Summer Olympics timekeeper's stopwatch inscribed "NEDERLANDSCH OLYMPISCH COMITE"  (Netherlands Olympic Committee) in red lettering on the face. Below that is "ELKA WATCH CY - AMSTERDAM" to indicate the maker Elka Watch Company a prestigious family-owned Dutch watch manufacturer founded in 1877 and eventually dissolved in 2000. Known for their unbreakable glass watchcase the Elka brand was quite popular throughout Europe long past WWII. The vintage stopwatch still works great activated by pressing down on the looped attachment on top (resets the same way). The outer dials records in 1/5 split second intervals up to 60 seconds while the inner dial keeps track of each running minute. A truly rare and refined piece for watch and Olympic collectors alike.

Note: we had it inspected by a local watch expert who confirmed its authenticity as originating from the era.
