This is simply an incredible artifact from the dawn of one of the great prewar dynasties in Major League Baseball the Philadelphia Athletics distant second-place finishers to a more famous Yankees club in 1927 but on the cusp of their own run of three-straight American League pennants from 1929-31. Despite having nine Hall of Famers on the roster the Athletics ended up 19 games behind the Yankees in 1927 but their own rise to the top was percolating and would eventually leave the aging Bronx Bombers in their wake.

The only one aging on this remarkable Athletics team - not-counting Mr. Mack age 65 - was Ty Cobb all of 40 years old that season and so decrepit that he hit only .357 a full nine percentage points below his lifetime average. The aging Mr. Cobb penned his signature on the sweet spot of this Official American League Reach baseball resplendent even 89 years later with its red and blue stitching and minimal fading of any of the official stampings or even the 31 signatures that carefully adorn each panel. With nine Hall of Famers - Mack Cobb Foxx Grove Simmons Cochrane Collins Wheat and Walberg - heading the lineup the ball represents a unique opportunity to find so many immortals on a single baseball with most of the signatures easily legible and only varying degrees of fading of ink intensity over the years. Among the remaining signatures: Charles Bates Max Bishop Joe Boley Dud Brannon Howard Ehmke Walt French Chick Galloway Sam Gray Sam Hale Bill Lamar Joe Pate Cy Perkins Jim Poole Ike Powers Jack Quinn Eddie Rommel and Lefty Willis.
