Among the prominent purveyors of jukeboxes slot and vending machines during the 1920s the Chicago-based "Mills" company drew worldwide acclaim for its "Violano Virtuoso" a machine that automatically played the violin and piano. As baseball soared in popularity the amusement magnate appealed to the masses with a less-cultured device the "PLAY BALL!" slot machine. Offered is an original example of that 1927 counter top craze. Secured to a 16" x 16" wooden platform this 24"-tall wooden structure features an ornately crafted metallic facing and a baseball-themed design that invites all comers. For one nickel a pull of the sizable lever on the right side sends the three-tiered images into motion. The top features a baseball field shaped marquis with manual scorekeeping functionality. The machine is in working order and includes keys necessary for entry into this machine in order to retrieve your bounty. A wondrous and functional display piece that would be a unique enhancement to any memorabilia display or rec room.
