Babe Ruth went into the 1927 season with something to prove. His mistake of trying to steal second base with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning of the 7th Game of the 1926 World Series gave the game and World Championship to the Cardinals and left the star red faced. Some sports writers claimed that now at the “old” age of 32 the Babe was all washed up and the Lou Gehrig would take his place as the greatest player in the game. Typically the Babe rose to the challenge and as soon as the season began he started hitting home runs at an unheard of pace. By the end of June he had 24: by the first week in September 44. Going into the final series of the season Ruth slammed three home runs off the Senators to end 1927 with 60 a new record. The Babe summed it up perfectly: "Sixty! Let's see some son of a bitch try to top that one”. The Yanks went on to sweep the hapless Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series Ruth hitting an even .400 and clotting a pair of home runs. During that epic 1927 season the Babe signed this Spalding Star baseball in green fountain pen. An inscription partially legible on a side panel reads “June 10 1927”. While we are not sure what the significance is of the date inscribed on this ball we do know that the Yankees played Chicago at Yankee Stadium that afternoon Ruth going 0 for 2 with a pair of walks. The ball shows some wear with some staining and abrasions throughout. While the inscription has faded Ruth’s signature remains strong.
