As the most recognizable man in the world, it was only natural that Babe Ruth would bring his talents to Hollywood. In the midst of Ruth’s greatest seasons, First National Pictures brought the slugger west to star in his own motion picture, “Babe Comes Home.” The 6-reel melodrama co-starred Anna Q. Nilsson and featured baseball action sequences filmed at Los Angeles’ Wrigley Field. In this Type 1 publicity photo, the ballpark is visible behind Ruth and actor Harry Gribbon, who are mugging for the camera. The few publicity photos, such as this Type 1 example, are all that remain of “Babe Comes Home,” as no copies exist, and today it is regarded as one of Hollywood’s great “lost films.” The Type 1 photo shows a warm sepia tone throughout. The reverse features several Brown Brothers credit stamps, the original caption slug, and a “JUL 22 1927” date stamp.
