The 1926 Yankees were the start of one of baseball’s most storied dynasties. Fielding essentially the same lineup, the Yankees won three consecutive pennants from 1926 to 1928, winning two World Championships and narrowly missing a third. This atmospheric team photo captures the 1926 team casually posing before a home game nattily dressed in their leather and wool warmup jackets. It takes only a quick glance to discern Babe Ruth’s unmistakable mug, flanked on his right by a young Tony Lazzeri. Both would play a big part in the Yankees tough loss in Game 7 of the World Series against the Cardinals. In one of the most dramatic moments in sports history, a hung-over Pete Alexander was summoned from the Cardinals bullpen in the bottom of the 7th inning with bases loaded and two outs and St. Louis clinging to a 3-2 lead. Alexander struck out Lazzeri to end the inning and then held the Yankees scoreless in the 8th and 9th innings. The game and series ended unceremoniously when Ruth, trying to start a rally, got thrown out attempting to steal second base. Disappointment lasted only a year because the Yanks came back with a vengeance and swept the Pirates in the 1927 series and did the same to the Cardinals in 1928. The star power on display in this image is incredible – besides Ruth and Lazzeri there are several other Hall of Famers shown including Lou Gehrig, Miller Huggins, Earle Combs, Waite Hoyt, and Herb Pennock. As if this Type 1 team photo was not enough on its own merit, it was used prominently in a well-known advertisement by McKibbin, Driscoll & Dorsey, Inc. of St. Paul to showcase their line of leather jackets the Yankees are wearing in the shot. The Type 1 photograph measures 8” x 10” and shows a nice sepia tone throughout. There is some light wear present on the white edges and minimal surface scuffs. The reverse of the photo has the Cosmo-Sileo credit stamping along with handwritten pencil notations. Please note that this lot does not include the advertisement; image is shown for context. This piece has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 Authentic by PSA.
