This extraordinary (7 x 34) panoramic photograph features The Kansas City Monarchs Champions of the Negro National League and the Hilldale Club Eastern Colored Champions. Both teams are lined up for a posed shot prior to Game 5 of the 1925 Colored World Series at Philadelphia's Baker Bowl. These same clubs met in the first Colored World Series in 1924 in which the Monarchs were victorious. Hilldale would capture the title of World Champions in the 1925 series. The photograph features 18 Hilldale team members and 15 Kansas City Monarch players with four Negro League executives in the center. Included are Biz Mackey Judy Johnson Louis Santop Jose Mendez among the many stars of these great teams. In the center is Andrew "Rube" Foster the founder of the Negro National League and the "Father of the Negro Leagues." All players and executives are identified at bottom in white lettering. The photograph is captioned along the bottom also in white lettering as follows: "Colored World Series. Kansas City vs. Hilldale. Philadelpia PA Oct 8th 1925 at Phila Nat League Park". The photo is credited to photographer Harold R. Stott of Philadelphia in the lower right. Hilldale won this game 2-1 and won the best of 9 game series 5 games to 1. Formerly part of the Jeff Eastland collection the offered piece has been acclaimed in hobby circles as one of the best Negro League photographs in existence. This is the very photograph used as the title page photo of the SABR Negro Leagues book. One of only two examples known this is by far the finest in terms of condition. (The other example described as having restoration with a Vg-Ex appearance appeared at public auction in 2003 and sold for $12501). Exhibiting flawless contrast and crystal clear detail the overall condition is Near Mint to Mint. It is believed that these photographs were produced exclusively for presentation to the Hilldale and Kansas City players and league executives. Housed in its original framed (8 x 35 overall) this museum-caliber panorama must be considered amongst the most significant and spectacular Negro League displays in existence.
