The Collins-McCarthy Candy Co. issued cards featuring players from the Pacific Coast League in conjunction with their Zeenut candy from 1911 through 1937. Nearly 4000 different cards were issued over the years with most featuring players who never became household names. Of course there are exceptions as the likes of Joe DiMaggio and Jim Thorpe were included in sets. The offered card features Jim Thorpe who is generally regarded as the greatest athlete of the last century. Thorpe's Major League playing career ended in 1919 but he continued to play Minor League baseball culminating his career with Portland of the PCL in 1922. The 35-year-old Thorpe did not disappoint the fans as he batted .308 in 35 games. Luckily for collectors Zeenut included the celebrity player in their 1922 set. As advanced collectors know Zeenuts are generally encountered in horrible condition. This card is the ultimate exception and represents the finest example of a Zeenut Thorpe in the hobby. The card which has had its tab meticulously removed is remarkably clean with near-perfect edges ending in four square well-formed corners. Its white background is absolutely brilliant. Thorpe's image is bold and crystal clear. The blank reverse is equally as impressive and exhibits no wear whatsoever. A miracle copy that stands alone as the sole PSA EX-MT 6 example with none graded higher.
