This extraordinary period double-exposure photograph depicts Harry Houdini seated in his signature rope-tied escape pose while the translucent figure of Abraham Lincoln appears behind him. Rather than a supernatural image, the photograph is an authentic period photographic illusion, created by exposing two glass plate negatives to produce a single composite print. Houdini himself titled the image "The Great Liberator Meets the Great Emancipator," pairing his own reputation as the world's greatest escape artist with Lincoln's enduring legacy.

Far from promoting belief in the paranormal, Houdini created photographs such as this to expose the deceptive techniques employed by spirit photographers and fraudulent mediums. Throughout the 1920s he staged convincing "spirit" photographs for lectures, press demonstrations, investigations, and publicity, showing audiences just how easily photographic manipulation could manufacture supposed evidence of ghosts—essentially exposing the era's equivalent of what we would today call "Photoshopping." His landmark work A Magician Among the Spirits (1924) was devoted entirely to exposing fraudulent spiritualists, while he addressed spirit photography and mediumistic deception throughout numerous other writings and public appearances. Earlier in his career, he similarly used Conjurers' Monthly Magazine (1906–1908) to reveal the methods of fraudulent performers and expose deceptive practices within the magic community.

Unlike commercially distributed Houdini publicity photographs, this and the handful of known Lincoln "spirit" images were never mass produced for public circulation. Instead, they appear to have been working demonstration pieces created for Houdini's anti-spiritualist campaign and very likely originated from his own research or reference archive. Their survival is therefore exceptionally uncommon.

This exact image has been exhibited and reproduced by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, underscoring its importance as a documented artifact at the intersection of American history and early photographic manipulation. The reverse retains its original period typed caption describing the image in Houdini's own words.

While Type I Houdini photographs are collectible in their own right, no other authenticated Type I example is known to depict Houdini's own deliberately staged double-exposure "spirit" photography featuring Abraham Lincoln. According to PSA/DNA, this is the only known graded example of any Houdini spirit photograph, making it a true one-of-one within the certified marketplace. The 6” by 8” photo represents one of the rarest and most historically significant Houdini photographs ever offered at public auction—a museum-caliber artifact spanning the worlds of magic, photography, and American history.
