Warren G. Harding’s nomination to the Republican presidential ticket in 1920 came as a complete surprise to most political watchers at the time. A political outsider who was unknown outside his native Ohio, Harding was thrust into the forefront after the Republican convention was deadlocked and no candidate could garner a majority. On the 10th ballot Harding emerged a winner and he went on to defeat Democrat candidate James Cox by winning 37 of the 48 states. Harding passed away on August 2, 1923, from a heart attack, and Vice President Calvin Coolidge took his place as president for the remainder of his term. This signed document from 1921 appoints an Assistant Surgeon to the United States Health Service. The appointment document is matted with a print of a painted portrait of the 29th President along with an engraved plaque that lists Harding’s career highlights. The complete framed display measures 28” x 41.5” and comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA.
