The 1919-20 Chicago Maroons men's basketball season was the final of nine seasons for head coach Pat Page. This group of basketball players earned the first Big Ten Conference championship in ten years for the Maroons with a 14-4 overall mark (10-2 in conference). The Maroons were led by All-American guard Paul Hinkle (of Hinkle Fieldhouse fame) who went on to build his legacy coaching at Butler University.
At the end of the regular season Chicago--atop the Big Ten--were named the champions of the Western Intercollegiate Conference. The University of Pennsylvania Quakers--champions of the Ivy League--had won the Eastern Intercollegiate Conference. To decide the 1920 National Collegiate Basketball Championship the teams played a three-game series in which Penn prevailed 2-1.
This lot features a vintage 1920 University of Chicago Maroons "Middle West States Academy Champions" 10K gold charm. The basketball charm includes plenty of writing (in black ink) on each of its panels including: "University of Chicago Middle West States Academy Champions 1920." It is adorned by a large "C" for Chicago in maroon (the paint has faded over time) across the top with what appears to be an academic institution inside the letter. This piece has got to be incredibly rare due to its age and the fact that we've never seen anything like it from that era of college basketball.
