Presented here is a rare 1920 Antwerp Summer Olympic Games winner’s trophy for rowing. The 1916 Olympic Games were canceled due to WW1 but following the 1918 Armistice the 1920 Games went on as scheduled. The Olympic flag was flown for the first time at these Belgium Games that starred Finnish distance runner Paavo Nurmi and USA’s Hawaiian swimmer Duke Kahanamoku who later became the Godfather of surfing. This beautiful trophy in the form of an ornate silver urn or vase was issued to a victorious rower (athlete team and event unknown). Designed by Henri Fugere one side depicts Nike Goddess of Victory in flight holding the Olympic rings perched between two Belgian lions. The other side features a serene image of rowing teams in competition. Two laurel branches adorn the top with two tower-looking handles attached to the rim. This marked the first time that the Olympic rings appeared on any winner's award (medal or trophy). The Belgian Lion engraving accurately identifies it as a 1920 Olympic winner's trophy. Made of a robust white metal alloy (perhaps pewter) it stands 39 cm tall and weighs 9.4 lbs. Polished for a nice shine. Presents NM-MT. Stunning piece.

Includes Letter of Authenticity from renowned Olympic memorabilia expert Ingrid O'Neil.
