After his 22-season playing career had ended Kid Gleason had the good fortune of gaining a managerial position. The only problem was his team happened to be the Chicago White Sox and the year happened to be 1919. Gleason steered his new squad all the way to the World Series only to witness his players lose the series on purpose. The next year brought a second-place finish in the pennant race followed by the permanent banishment of Joe Jackson and his fellow "Eight Men Out." Gleason piloted the Pale Hose for three more seasons but he never fully recovered from the scandal and eventually suffered a nervous breakdown.

Presented here is Kid Gleasons Louisville Slugger William J. "Kid" Gleason game bat with labeling from the 1916-21 period that post-dates his career as a player but covers his infamous Black Sox tenure. The bat shows evidence of tremendous use with a handle crack that has been repaired with several 'bat boy' nails. The barrel is covered with ball marks ball stitch marks and other abrasions indicating heavy use. There is a moderate coat of pine tar on the lower handle. Lathe marks are visible on the knob and top of barrel which is typical for bats of this era. There is also evidence on the right and left barrel of factory side-writing which is no longer legible. An accompanying letter of authenticity from renowned bat experts Vince Malta and John Taube expresses their opinion that this bat was used by "Kid" Gleason as a manager with the Chicago White Sox between the years 1919 and 1921. A rare and intriguing bat that would be a fine enhancement to any Black Sox memorabilia collection. Length: 34.5 inches. Weight: 36 ounces.

Includes a LOA from Vince Malta/John Taube of PSA/DNA.
