The historical significance of this M101-6 Felix Mendelsohn Babe Ruth card cannot be overstated. Not only is this the first card issued for Ruth as a member of the New York Yankees it is the ultimate card issue chronicling Ruth’s transition from the Red Sox to Yankees arguably the most transformative event in baseball history.Produced by Chicago publisher Felix Mendelsohn and issued through the Sporting News over a period of several years (approximately 1917-1920) this 4-1/4" x 6" blank-backed item features a spectacular illustration of Babe Ruth in his Red Sox uniform plying his trade as a pitcher.
Earlier issued versions of this card identify Ruth as a member of the Red Sox. When Ruth was sold to the Yankees just before the production run of this set ended Ruth's team affiliation was changed on the card to “Yankees.”The exceptional imagery and impressive size of this issue combine for a highly appealing aesthetic. At a glance the presented specimen has an EX-MT appearance with remarkably sharp corners. Only close scrutiny reveals a small ¾” crescent shaped wrinkle above the small “b” in “Babe.” The only other notable faults are a few small spots on the reverse where adhesive was used for prior mounting to an album page most likely. These issues are so extremely subtle that the low PSA technical grade of GD 2 is initially shocking. Combining the eye appeal rarity and historical significance of this early career Ruth card this is an offering worthy of the most advanced collection of trophy cards.
