1916 was the second consecutive season in which the Boston Red Sox appeared in the World Series. The team won the pennant by two games and boasted the best pitching staff in the majors with Carl Mays and Dutch Leonard each winning 18 games while a young Babe Ruth led the team with 23. This photograph was taken by George Grantham Bain on October 7, 1916, before the first game of the World Series against Brooklyn. Interestingly, the game was played at Braves Field instead of Fenway, due to the larger seating capacity. The Sox would go on to win their second consecutive World Championship by beating Brooklyn 4 games to 1. The photograph beautifully captures the eventual World Champs, with their ace, Babe Ruth, sitting cross legged in the front row, a look of bemusement on his broad face. The photograph measures 4 ½ x 6 ¾ and has been printed to the edges. There is a crease in the upper left corner that does not encroach into the image of the players or the writing from Bain, otherwise, the image is in excellent condition with no other issues to report. The reverse carries the Culver Pictures stamping along with the original caption slug with the date of Oct. 7, 1916. “Babe Ruth front row 4th from left” has been handwritten in pencil and there are several pieces of paper affixed and a stamped identification number.
