One of the "Elite Eight" Texas Tommy cards from our highly publicized "Yahtzee Box Find," this is the first Stuffy McInnis from the short-lived 1914 E224 series ever graded by PSA. Rated GOOD 2, it shows the level of wear and aging expected of a 100+ year-old card. Being distributed loosely in candy packages didn't help matters either. Centering is a bit off and colors are somewhat faded, but there are no major surface issues other than a few brief creases. Corners are evely rounded. Back is mostly clean and bio print displays well. Since none have been graded by SGC, this the only known Stuffy to exist, a true 1-of-1 until another surfaces.
John Phalen "Stuffy" McInnis was a true Gloucesterman on the baseball diamond, doing whatever it took to get the job done. A native of the famous Massachusetts seaport town, he broke through with Connie Mack's Athletics in 1909 and soon replaced Harry Davis at first base in their "$100,000 Infield" alongside Jack Barry and Hall of Famers Eddie Collins and Frank "Home Run" Baker. Stuffy was a major part of two World Series teams in Philly before getting one with the Red Sox in 1918 and another with the Pirates in 1925 towards the end of his 19-year career. Few major leaguers can say they played for four World Champions, not to mention wiith three different ballclubs. The .307 lifetime hitter finished with over 2,400 knocks and was nearly impossible to strikeout, fanning just 189 times in 7,822 career at-bats. McInnis was one of the top defenders of his era as well. In 1921, he went 119 straight games without an error for the Red Sox and held the franchise record for 86 years--86 years, sound familiar?
