Born in the hamlet of Kennett Square Pennsylvania Herb Pennock graduated from high school and went straight into the majors embarking on an eventful Major League Baseball career that lasted from 1912 through 1933. Though he is best known for his time spent with the star-studded New York Yankee teams of the mid to late 1920s and early 1930s Pennock’s career began in his home state where Connie Mack signed Pennock to his Philadelphia Athletics in 1912. Pennock won his first World Series pitching for the Philadelphia Athletics in only his second year in 1913. He would go on to win five more as Babe Ruth’s teammate in Boston (1915) and in New York (1923 1927 1928 & 1932). The watermark season of Pennock’s Hall of Fame career was 1924 in which he went 21-9 with a 2.83 ERA while striking out a career-high 101 batters.

This item is Pennock's Philadelphia Athletics team issued jacket from the 1913 World Championship season with the A's.  This blue wool double-breasted six-button jacket has a grey and red design reminiscent of a Native American pattern around the middle. The manufacturer's label in the collar is illegible due to wear and fading but is indicative of A.G. Spalding & Bros. labeling of the period. Stitched below the collar label is the name "Pennock" in large script. All original buttons remain intact and the jacket shows solid wear but no structural faults. Three vintage snapshots are included showing Pennock wearing this jacket while hunting as well as a letter from Eddie Collins Jr. (who was married to Herb Pennock's daughter) who recounts finding the jacket in "an old trunk in the attic of the Pennock house."
