Also rostered with these Boston Americans was Eddie Cicotte (seated at Speaker's immediate right) the mighty hurler who sold his soul to the bad guys in the 1919 World Series conspiracy. But this photo postcard dates earlier...much earlier when Eddie was merely grumbling about tight-fisted management. By 1912 Cicotte was entering his fifth season with Boston where he'd already demonstrated a worthy aptitude in the art of pitching. His feuds with Red Sox owner John Taylor reached saturation about midway into this season and Eddie was dealt to the White Sox.
Meanwhile in Hot Springs anticipation ran high as Cicotte advanced this particular team photo postcard to his brother in rural Michigan. Addressed to "Mr. James Cicotte [in] Goodrich Mich." the card is postmarked March 23rd 1912 and Eddie's brief note lightly scolds his older sibling for not writing. Despite its passing through the mails this card is in remarkably decent condition. It's characterized by light/mild corner wear and a small ding at the left edge. There are no major creases or blemishes; the light and resolution are ideal and the piece would be welcomed at EX. Cicotte signed the card familiarly as "Ed." (Included is a modern printing taken from the Internet that details an 1880 census conducted in Warren Michigan. Therein is cited the Cicotte family - to include brother James - but this census was taken three years before Eddie's birth.)
With his shift to the White Sox Eddie enjoyed no relief in the miserly policies of management. And a couple years later a similar pathological thrift cost the Red Sox the services of Tris Speaker who refused to sign a cut-in-pay contract.
